Suburban Announces Trail Run Series Sponsorship in Bubbling Market Entry

Suburban is now the official title sponsor of Lukenya Trail Run; the deal, is set to run through 2025, including for the current trail run series which includes Karen, Lukenya & Shompole Trail Runs. It marks the latest in a series of major sports sponsorships for Suburban as the brand looks to build its base with new consumer groups and differentiate itself amid growing competition in the eCommerce  sector.

“I love being early and new in things,” Vincent Ochieng, Suburban’s Managing Director, told us. “You get to beta test stuff together, and we’re just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. I love that, as opposed to entering into some big old thing with all these rules defined already. We’re writing the rules together here.”

Suburban has been developing its sports sponsorship portfolio across sports leagues in the future, and the partnership with RUNNERSPOINT marks the brand’s first foray into the trail running community. Stepping into golf sponsorship is part of the immediate future plans, as an effort to gain ground with affluent demographics.

“We obviously seek over-index on the middle-aged, fitness conscoius demo by the end of this year,” Ochieng said. Our main goal is to hit 50% brand awareness among the active lifestyle market in East Africa, by end of 2025. 

So, like some other brands looking for up-and-coming teams and leagues to partner with, Suburban is looking for greener pastures—or, in this case, fairways.

“It’s a new league, and that means less of what you normally would see in golf and more of a true partnership than a sponsorship, where we can do things together,” Hubman said. “We can cocreate together, and it could be something where we can test and iterate and be nimble.”

The sponsorship, which officially kicks off on May 25th at Lukenya Trail Run will include event merchandise and arch sponsorships and will also focus on community fitness groups. Suburban and RUNNERSPOINT are still discussing the details.
